ABTL - Association of Business Trial Lawyers

San Diego

The First Amendment was center stage when the Pentagon Papers were leaked in 1971, leading to the landmark free press case of New York Times v. United States . It is again today with fake news, debates about the role of media, and legal challenges galore. Join us for a conversation about the stakes then and now with Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Margaret McKeown ; UCSD Professor Emeritus Sam Popkin , who was jailed for failure to answer the grand jury's questions regarding distribution of the Pentagon Papers; and Lorie Hearn , Executive Director and founder of the award-winning inewsource , a nonpartisan investigative journalism organization in San Diego.

Using short clips from the recent movie, "The Post," about the Washington Post's role in publishing the Pentagon Papers, the panel will explore the ethical and practical boundaries of journalists, disclosure of sources, government secrecy, and transparency.
