Landmark Decisions from the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2025-2026 Term

The Supreme Court’s 2025-26 session
was undeniably
one of the most consequential
in decades.

The Court considered blockbuster cases on signature aspects of President Trump’s second-term agenda, including presidential tariff power, the ability of the President to remove heads of so-called independent agencies (including the Federal Reserve), and the meaning of birthright citizenship under the Constitution and federal statutes. The Court also sharply limited the scope of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and decided important cases concerning, among many other areas, the First Amendment, the Second Amendment, the Fourth Amendment, transgender equality rights in the athletic arena, and states’ power to regulate federal election logistics and ballot counting.

And the Term continued to feature many controversies—both in the Justices’ written opinions and in their out-of-Court speeches—over the so-called “interim relief,” or “shadow,” docket.
